instructional-strategies-for-students-of-poverty-and-ells

Students of poverty and/or English Language Learners (ELLs) who are not well prepared for school have the toughest time showing academic progress. As a result, teachers who instruct these populations must truly understand the role that academic language acquisition plays in the students’ academic success.

During this professional learning, participants will learn how carefully structured instruction can help students of poverty and ELLs make great strides in closing the achievement gap. Vocabulary and literacy research-based strategies that scaffold the learning of all students will be demonstrated. Participants will also learn how to become careful observers in order to make appropriate instructional decisions, as well as create instruction that targets higher order thinking skills.
